Child Perfume Roll On by Child Perfume: How To Do The Most: Travel Edition (excerpt)

Commuting from Maryland to New York during the holidays doesn’t sound like a rip-roaring good time, but you don’t understand—I take the train. For yours truly, that three-and-a-half hour Amtrak train hustle is an absolutely thrilling whirlwind from the mid-Atlantic to Penn Station. After that, sprinting around Manhattan for eight hours before the three-and-a-half hour return trip requires a special set of skills. It requires an intensive amount of prep (at least if you're a kook like me) to keep a tight grip on your fate and the will to do it all over again next time duty calls.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail! It’s taken me years of obsessive Googling, list-making, and the occasional trial and error (getting stuck underground in a non-AC face-melting subway for 45 minutes drenched in sweat from armpit to waistband) to come up with a fail-safe safety net of goods that I can carry—literally—close to my heart. If the content on this page are my last will and testament, I will be happy with that. This is the best of my best for you guys.

Doodads

Last but absolutely never least, a rollerball oil fragrance that smells like a fresh shower can make a momentous difference. Child perfume makes me smell like I sleep in a meadow of fresh flowers and rise with dew drops on my eyelashes! Plus, I read somewhere that John Mayer loves and easily recognizes this scent when in his presence, just saying.

CHILD PERFUME ROLL ON BY CHILD PERFUME: Cult Classics: Child Perfume

CHILD Perfume was created by artisan perfumer Susan D. Owens in 1990. It was (and still is) a hand-crafted, very personal blend of jasmine and aromatics. It smells like the beach, but without what we think of as modern beachy vibes (pina colada) ... it has an intense breezy-ness and a very robust floralcy that mellows to a sensual femininity that many across genders seem to find addictive.

It's also one of the OG rollerball oils, and blends amazingly with other fragrances. If you're looking for something new to transition to Spring, consider this cult classic...

Child Perfume Roll On by Child Perfume: Magical

"This is the only perfume I have ever worn where total strangers come up to me every time I go out and ask me what the scent is... I never get tired of wearing it and when I do I feel like I am wearing a secret.... and that is fun. Child Perfume comes from another place.”

Child Perfume Roll On by Child Perfume: Innovative Fragrance Formulas

Blooming with the essence of exotic white flowers, this oil-based scent is decidedly sweet but not the least bit juvenile. Madonna, Mandy Moore, Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian (who buys six large bottles at a time!) are among this fragrance’s devotees, perhaps because of its unique blend of floral, powdery, woody and musky notes.

Child Perfume Roll On by Child Perfume: Oooh, Child!

Well!  It’s finally stopped raining – at least for a couple of days – and the garden is losing its mind, with roses budding out ahead of the irises, etc (I think I already yabbered on about that). Hostas going wild, jumping up 5″ in a day! Plants really do prefer rain to hose water – and why not! I couldn’t get out in the garden for a week, it was so cold and wet, so I spent that time sampling Child. I think I was in the throes of Something or Other when it first came out because I remember it showing up at Barneys – but that’s all I remember. Now it’s at Beautyhabit and they were kind enough to send me a little sample bag, so I was able to take some time with it. I didn’t realize Child has a perfume roll-on – I likes it! Something about roll-ons soften a lot of perfumes, bringing them closer in to the skin. Not that Child needs any particular help with that – the notes are the epitome of Soft and Pretty, which you know I love:

Top: Vanilla, Lilac, Faint Magnolia.
Heart: Jasmine, Tuberose, Violet.
Base: Crème Musk, Rose, Mimosa.

Not sure what Crème Musk is but whatever it is, it doesn’t overpower the warm flowers, which is great, and it gives the perfume a nice, solid (but not overwhelming) ‘bottom’. I wore Child Perfume for 3 days in a row and got so many compliments! Interestingly, not one of the compliments was ‘what perfume are you wearing?’ – all of them were ‘wow. you smell GREAT!’. It’s a non-skin scent that succeeds in being a perfect skin scent. To me, Child smells like a place – or, rather, a place in time. Every time I open the rollerball I’m transported back…but I can’t quite pinpoint where it is I am. One minute it’s 1972 and I’m in Love’s Baby Soft, listening to ‘Baby I’ma Want You’ and sighing over the Senior guys. The next I am in 1954, in a kitchen with a pink table and chairs, which is strange because I wasn’t yet born. But there ya go. It’s a cozy, close scent, the roll-on, perfect for wearing (dare I say it) even in an office environment ( assuming you don’t work in an office full of jackbooted Perfume Brownshirts). The vanilla warms up the violet and, oddly enough, tames the tuberose, so you don’t get any one note – the whole thing is shimmering and seamless and makes me feel like I’m wearing a polished cotton shirt, even when I’m wearing some tshirt out of the work drawer and my favorite yoga pants, with the wear hole above the left knee. I prefer the roll-on to the spray.

Beautyhabit Moves Into M.Fredric’s Westlake Village Store

The online apothecary expands from the screen to physical space with an in-store shop at the retailer stocking brands such as Diptyque, Child Perfumes, Avene skin care and Kosas.

Beautyhabit has taken up residence at M.Fredric’s flagship in Westlake Village, Calif.

The online apothecary now occupies nearly 200 square feet inside the contemporary clothing and accessories store, which is less than a mile from its headquarters. The in-store shop represents a return for Beautyhabit to brick-and-mortar retailing after closing down a boutique about six years ago to focus on growing a digital business.

Bringing Niche Luxury Brands to People in Local Area

“We wanted to bring niche, hard-to-find luxury brands to people living in this area,” said Paula Vazquez, who owns Beautyhabit with her sister Teresa Mitchell. “There is a lot of money here, but people feel they have to get in their cars and go on the freeway to Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills or even the San Fernando Valley to get what they want. They can actually get it here.”

We Stock Over 35 Luxury Cosmetic Brands

Beautyhabit’s selection at M.Fredric spans roughly 200 stockkeeping units from 35 brands, including Christophe Robin, Memo Perfumes, Diptyque, Eau d’Italie, Rodin, Chantecaille, Smith & Cult, Neom Organics, ALTAIA, Comme des Garcons, Cire Trudon, Fragonard, Martial Vivot, Child Perfumes, Kosas, This Works and Au Pays de la Fleur d’Oranger. Although not all the brands lean green, Beautyhabit zeroed in on natural and organic vendors as well as gift items for the assortment.

“I’ve known Paula for years. She’s very sharp and a really great businesswoman,” said M.Fredric owner Fred Levine. “We believed Beautyhabit would be a nice complement to our apparel, kids clothing and accessories. We certainly wouldn’t want to handle beauty on our own. We had a huge entryway that was filled with mannequins and displays, and we thought, ‘Let’s put product in there.” There was room for it, and it’s worked out well.”

Modern & Industrial Interior

Vazquez described the look of Beautyhabit’s in-store shop as modern and industrial. It contains wood and iron, and contrasting hard and soft materials. Beautyhabit staffs the shop within M.Fredric. Vazquez said the store’s proximity to Beautyhabit offices allows it to keep a close watch on the sales performance of products and quickly respond to consumer demand. “We can swap things in and out all the time until we see what hits,” she noted.

Beautyhabit is the latest concept to diversify the merchandise mix at M.Fredric. Prior to its in-store presentation, the retailer linked with David’s Shoes and Free People on shops-in-shop at various locations. “We think that the future of brick-and-mortar retail is to have almost like mini department stores and fulfill the customers’ needs beyond apparel from people really top-notch in their fields, “ said Levine.

M.Fredric and Beautyhabit are exploring installing Beautyhabit set-ups at additional M.Fredric locations. The retailer has nine company-owned stores in Southern California and two licensed locations in partnership with Hudson Group at LAX and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. Another two licensed locations are opening soon at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas and the Dallas-Fort Worth airport.

Child Perfume Roll On by Child Perfume: I’m Obsessed: Child Perfume

It’s hard to forget about the one that got away, even when it’s a fragrance. Serrano first discovered Child Perfume Roll On when reading the pages of InStyle years ago, but had trouble tracking the elusive scent—that was a celeb favorite—down. In a twist of perfume fate, the scent resurfaced when it appeared on her desk one day. Needless to say, its blend of mimosa, lilac, and rose is just as intoxicating years later and the rollerball has a permanent place in her scent rotation.

Child Perfume by Child: The Cult-Classic Scent Everyone Falls in Love With

Some scents have an almost-mystical quality... These fragrances are few and far between, but once discovered they tend to achieve cult-classic status and stick around for a long, long time. Child Perfume is one of these scents, and despite a relatively low profile (you won’t find it at department or large-chain beauty stores) it has been the number-one selling fragrance on Beautyhabit for 10 years.

Billed as a white floral with top notes of vanilla, lilac and magnolia; heart notes of jasmine, tuberose and violet; and base notes of crème musk, rose and mimosa; it’s the lingering powdery scent that really hooked me. It’s soft and feminine yet somehow provocative—and I can’t stop sniffing my wrist as I write this. In fact, the smell is so intoxicating (and inspiring) that it just arrived for review this morning and I couldn’t wait to share my thoughts.

Perhaps the fact that each and every bottle of roll-on and spray is hand-poured by founder Susan D. Owens has something to do with the addictive aroma. And after 10 years, celebrities like Madonna, Jennifer Aniston, Khloe Kardashian, Mandy Moore, Britney Spears and a litany of others have professed their love for Child.

Child Perfume Roll On by Child Perfume: Why You Should Update Your Fragrance for Vacation

The best memories are usually created while soaking up the sun on vacation. It’s no wonder specific scents from our favorite destinations—like island gardenias or fresh cut grass—bring a smile to our face. This association can literally transport you from your cubicle to the tropics, which is why so many fragrances we pack for trips end up becoming mainstays in our beauty cabinet. We asked Team Zoe what perfumes they will be traveling with this summer—the resulting list is a mix of under-the-radar eau de parfums, unisex colognes and iconic fragrances. One thing is for sure, a vacation scent has the power to last much longer than your actual trip.

Beauty Editor, Stephanie Montes
“The first time I went to New York City, I packed the only travel-sized perfume I owned and wore it the entire time I was there. Now every time I wear Child Perfume, the smell of vanilla, jasmine and musk takes me back. Fun fact: I got two compliments on it by two different strangers on the same day.”

Child Perfume by Child: Look Who's Talking

Child's Play - The Birth of a Fragrance

When Susan, a former labor and delivery nurse, mixed up the first batch of oils at a friend's California boutique, Star Wind, amidst new-age talismans, mood-rendering waterfalls, crystal balls and bottles of aromatic oils, she had no idea to just what she was giving birth. The fragrance she would later name Child, has become an organic, yet unforeseen adventure that has amassed a cult following among celebs such as Madonna, Britney Spears, Sigourney Weaver and Mandy Moore.

But before she became a fragrance artist, blending and pouring each bottle by hand in her Hollywood Hills Bungalow, she was a model with flaxen hair (her signature) who partied with members from big-haired bands Motley Cru and Poison. It was during that time Susan was summoned to become a Playboy Playmate. She's proud of her pictorial, but the former bunny is all business. She even changed her name when the fragrance "hit" in 1990, from Susie Bunny, to Susan D, artisan perfumer. "How can you be bigger than the bunny?" she laughs.

Child, with its seductive jasmine notes, breathes a siren song that lulls men such as admitted Child fan Vince Vaughn, whose rumored lady Jennifer Aniston reportedly purchased 10 limited edition fragrance sets recently. And actress Jennie Garth has been quoted more than once professing the scent's ability to "drive men wild." Her liquid gold was first sold at Fred Segal in L.A., the imperial seat for hip-seekers, then at New York's Henri Bendel, becoming the retailers' No. 1 selling fragrance. The elixir is sold at only 25 doors nationwide, on websites beautyhabit.com and in Dallas at Talulah Belle.

Susan calls Dallas home now, and has give birth to Child's sibling. But there's no rivalry here. The 2-year-old musky men's brew, named Heir, (although) women wear it too) is as loved as her original, eliciting kudos from world fragrance expert Michael Edwards.

"Fragrance has an emotional impact—the ability to take you back," she says softly. "Child is divine and mysterious. All the scents that were out there were wimpy, and I certainly wasn't!"

HOTS: Love, friends, being touched, plush king-size mattresses, The Anonymous 4 Chilingirian Quartet CD with Tavern, paintings by Sonny DeLipsey, The Near Death Experience of Mellen-Thomas, first few sips of fresh hot coffee in the morning, smiling followed by exhausting laughter.

NOTS: When I hear the statement, "YOU don't have a boyfriend?," Penn & Teller's constant cussing by the big guy, alarm clocks, spilling perfume, too much drama (a little is fine), a bad, bad kiss, the wrong red lipstick, not being yourself.
